Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford's love for acting grew when she was young. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth application, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. However, she already made a TV appearance in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
